Epilepsy, a broad term used for a disorder that causes seizures, can often be misunderstood, which is why a D.C. mother said she is working with local lawmakers in an effort to increase awareness in schools.Mollie Ellis, who has an 8-year-old daughter with epilepsy in the D.C. public school system, said she has endured disturbing situations involving nurses and school employees who have no idea how to handle her daughter’s condition. In some cases, school nursing staff members have refused to give the girl her prescribed medication, Ellis said.“We’re really on top of making sure the school has all the paperwork and proper medications as prescribed by her doctor,” Ellis said. “But we still have run into several times over the last three years when she was denied her medication.”Some of the reasons for refusing to give the girl her medication have included staff members not understanding epilepsy, or not being fully comfortable giving children such ...Construction to improve pedestrian safety on Federal Boulevard starts soon

DENVER (KDVR) -- A section of one of the busiest boulevards in Denver is about to get a serious makeover and it is probably going to cause some traffic trouble before it is finished.Advocates for safer streets said there have been way too many pedestrian crashes along Federal Boulevard. They said the new improvements should lessen those accidents. "It's currently designed like a highway to move as many cars as fast as possible which is just really in direct conflict with how people are trying to use the street. The EU is discussing ramping up sanctions against Iran over its support for Hamas — but there is a wide split among EU diplomats over whether that’s a good idea.Meanwhile, the big three EU member states — Germany, France and Italy — also have drawn up plans, seen by POLITICO, on how to further sanction Hamas. Tehran has long been a key backer of Hamas, which carried out attacks on October 7 in which some 1,400 Israeli citizens were killed and more than 240 people kidnapped. U.S. and Israeli officials have stated there is no evidence directly linking Iran to the attack. Yet some within the EU want to prepare extra sanctions on Iran, in particular a ban on the export of components used in the production of missiles. The EU listed Hamas as a terrorist organization years ago and there are a number of sanctions already in place. As for Iran, last month the EU decided to keep in place its sanctions linked to the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Ac...The Godfather of Maasmechelen — How Italy’s ‘ndrangheta mafia went global

On an early spring morning earlier this year, Belgian police carrying an international arrest warrant swooped in on a gated villa. Then came a loud knock on the door, and Lucio Aquino — known as the “Godfather of Maasmechelen” — was handcuffed and led to a waiting police car.The arrest was part of a pan-European bust, as pol...St. John’s Prep runs away from BC High with second-half avalanche
