ROME — A former Italian premier, in an interview published on Saturday, contended that a French air force missile accidentally brought down a passenger jet over the Mediterranean Sea in 1980 in a failed bid to assassinate Libya’s then leader Moammar Gadhafi.Former two-time Premier Giuliano Amato appealed to French President Emmanuel Macron to either refute or confirm his assertion about the cause of the crash on June 27, 1980, which killed all 81 persons aboard the Italian domestic flight. In an interview with Rome daily La Repubblica, Amato said he is convinced that France hit the plane while targeting a Libyan military jet. While acknowledging he has no hard proof, Amato also contended that Italy tipped off Gadhafi, and so the Libyan, who was heading back to Tripoli from a meeting in Yugoslavia, didn’t board the Libyan military jet. What caused the crash is one of modern Italy’s most enduring mysteries. Some say a bomb exploded aboard the Itavia jetliner on a flight from ...Orioles claim Jorge López off waivers, reuniting with All-Star relief pitcher they traded last season: ‘We’re hoping he can help us’

The Orioles are adding a familiar face to their bullpen.Baltimore is reuniting with right-hander Jorge López, the All-Star closer it traded last season, after claiming him on waivers from the Miami Marlins, the team announced Saturday afternoon.López, who has struggled this season with the Minnesota Twins and Miami Marlins, is not postseason eligible because he was not in the organization before Sept. 1. The Orioles designated right-hander Logan Gillaspie for assignment to make room for López on the 40-man roster. A move to add López, who hasn’t reported to the team in Arizona, to the 28-man roster has yet to be made.Manager Brandon Hyde said he hopes López can “feel at home” when he joins the Orioles and “pitch well for us” over the final month of the regular season.“Lópey is somebody that a lot of us in that clubhouse are close with,” Hyde said. “He had some really good moments in the first half last yea...Basic literacy profoundly affected by school shutdowns

They were the kids most disrupted by the pandemic, the ones who were still learning to write their names and tie their shoes when schools shut down in the spring of 2020.Now, they’re the big kids at elementary schools across the United States. Many still need profound help overcoming the effects of the pandemic. To catch up, schools have deployed a wide range of strategies. And among some incoming fourth-graders, there are encouraging signs of gains. But as this generation progresses, many will need extra reading support that schools are not as accustomed to providing for older students.Beyond third grade, fewer teachers each year know how to help students who are lacking key foundational reading skills, said Elizabeth Albro, an executive at the U.S. Department of Education’s independent research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences.“Middle and high school teachers aren’t expecting to have to teach kids how to read,” Albro said.Nationally, students suffered deep learning setbacks...ASFL Home Run Derby: Conte crushes homers in cancer fight

His 17 homers in the final round were six more than second-place finisher Wilfred Santiago (Archbishop Williams), helping Conte win for the first time in his three years of competing.Conte and Williston’s Colin Larson took turns breaking a derby single-round record, while four players forced “swing-offs” to advance.“Very blessed to be here, I had a great time,” Conte said. “I felt good (in the final round), I got on a little hot streak where I think I hit five or six in a row, and that’s what really I feel like helped (me win). … It’s definitely bigger than baseball, we all come together ...Fifty properties on evacuation order in three B.C. wildfire zones dropped to alert
