YouTube sends gun videos to 9-year-olds: ‘It’s not the kids. It’s the algorithms,’ study finds

WASHINGTON (AP) — When researchers at a nonprofit that studies social media wanted to understand the connection between YouTube videos and gun violence, they set up accounts on the platform that mimicked the behavior of typical boys living in the U.S.They simulated two nine-year-olds who both liked video games, especially first-person shooter games. The accounts were identical, except that one clicked on the videos recommended by YouTube, and the other ignored the platform’s suggestions. The account that clicked on YouTube’s suggestions was soon flooded with graphic videos about school shootings, tactical gun training videos and how-to instructions on making firearms fully automatic. One video featured an elementary school-age girl wielding a handgun; another showed a shooter using a .50 caliber gun to fire on a dummy head filled with lifelike blood and brains. Many of the videos violate YouTube’s own policies against violent or gory content. The findings show that d...

Parliamentary committee calls for modernized Safe Third Country Agreement

OTTAWA — A parliamentary committee is calling for Canada’s Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States to include new exemptions allowing some asylum seekers to make claims in Canada after arriving south of the border. The agreement, first signed in 2004, means asylum seekers must make their claim wherever they arrive first — and they are turned away if they try to cross the border to make a claim in the other country. But the House of Commons immigration committee tabled a report today that calls for Canada to negotiate exceptions to that rule, particularly when it comes to people who have experienced gender-based violence. Immigration lawyer Maureen Silcoff told the committee in November that claimants who seek asylum due to female genital mutilation, domestic violence or the fear of sexual assault face more-restrictive laws in the U.S. and are more likely to be offered protection in Canada.U.S. President Joe Biden pledged to restore asylum provisions for domestic viol...

But here, there is an increased chance of discovering more peculiar objects, like a message in a bottle, shell-encrusted dolls or even an artificial limb. “We do weekly surveys looking for stranded sea turtles, nesting sea turtles, [and count] endangered species, [like] birds, things like that. But we all were always coming across odd items,” said Jace Tunnel, Reserve Director of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve. Tunnel said because of the way our ocean currents work, the Texas coast gets much more marine debris washing up on its shore than any other Gulf state. Odd items frequently wash up on Aransas, Texas, beaches because of the Loop Current (Photo courtesy: Jace Tunnell, Mission-Aransas National Estuarin...
