GOP Rep. Ken Buck plans to challenge his party’s direction under Trump as he leaves the House

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Ken Buck has had enough. When the Colorado Republican announced this past week that he would not seek reelection, he began with the type of criticism of Democratic policies that is standard fare for a hard-line conservative. But then Buck turned his ire to fellow Republicans, spending most of the three-minute announcement video accusing them of being “obsessively fixated on retribution and vengeance for contrived injustices of the past.”Buck’s scorched-earth approach caught few on Capitol Hill by surprise. With a deadpan demeanor, an independent streak and a background as a federal prosecutor, Buck has gained national prominence as a House Republican fed up with Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 presidential election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden and the Trump allies in Congress who amplify them. It’s a stand few others in the GOP are taking and is a remarkable turn that shows just how deeply Trump’s once-fringe lies about that race have settl...During strike talks, Biden worked to build ties to the UAW’s leader. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden called the head of the United Auto Workers union to congratulate him this past week on getting a new contract with General Motors and to wish him a happy 55th birthday — a sign of how the relationship had evolved since their first get-to-know-you meeting in the Oval Office on July 19.UAW President Shawn Fain launched the strike against GM, Ford and Chrysler-owner Stellantis with a willingness to force political leaders to choose between backing unions or corporations. Biden had long straddled this line. He proclaimed in speeches that unions built the middle class, but he also heralded his credentials as a former senator from the “corporate capital of the world,” also known as Delaware. The White House was determined to build trust with Fain and look past his occasional slights of Biden. That approach, which included Biden meeting with workers on the picket line in Michigan, helped to resolve the nearly 45-day set of strikes and produc...5 dog breeds this veterinarian says he'd never own — and why

(NEXSTAR) — No matter how experienced you are with pet care, getting a new dog can be intimidating. And depending which canine organization you ask, there are several hundreds of dog breeds in the world — how do you know which is the right one for you? It's not an easy question. In fact, it might be easier to narrow down dogs you don't want first. So we asked one of TikTok's premier veterinarians, Ben Simpson-Vernon, also known as Ben the Vet, to elaborate on some of the dog breeds he wouldn't own or recommend. While the U.K.-based vet underlines that these are only his opinions, the reasons why these breeds were singled out generally has to do with the animal's welfare and not personal grievances. Who is ‘Dollarita Steve’? SF software engineer goes viral after earthquake These are the breeds he discussed.Chow Chow"I'm sure there are some nice ones but I just find they often don't have a very nice temperament. They can be really aloof," says Simpson-Vernon. "And they're often very ...'A House in Austin' to hold first Authors Around the House event

AUSTIN (KXAN) — There's a logjam at the top of the Big 12 Conference standings, and the No. 7 Texas Longhorns are hoping to do something about Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. There are five teams at 4-1 five games into the schedule and two of them meet in Austin when the Longhorns welcome No. 23 Kansas State at 11 a.m. The Wildcats boast the No. 5 rushing offense in FBS and have a two-headed monster at quarterback in senior Will Howard and freshman Avery Johnson. What do Kansas State coordinators think about Texas QB Maalik Murphy, red zone battle? Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian ruled defensive back Jalen Catalon out but said he's been practicing and could be available next week when the Longhorns head north to Fort Worth to play TCU. Maalik Murphy is back at quarterback for the Longhorns, filling in for Quinn Ewers as he recovers from a shoulder injury suffered against Houston. Sarkisian still considers Ewers "week-to-week" with his injury.Texas has defeated the Wildcats...Soucheray: Values? These aren’t values. This is an agenda

When the citizens of St. Paul go to the polls Tuesday, if any voters still actually go to the polls on voting day, they will encounter candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America. A DSA endorsement is apparently anticipated and enjoyed by candidates who call themselves progressive, but, in fact, take an often dim and not very cheerful view of our city.In Ward 5, for example, the North End and the Como neighborhoods, Hwa Jeong Kim has received the endorsement of all progressive groups, including the DSA. Progressive candidates talk about their shared values for the city. They aren’t values. They are agendas.Ripping up Summit Avenue for an elevated bike path is not a value, not when you lose trees, pour more concrete and devalue the one and only avenue in the country that still showcases the aspirational and inspirational splendor of its Victorian heritage. That’s an agenda. The DSA has an extensive agenda, most of it straight-out antithetical to, I would hope, most voter...Working Strategies: A helpful reading list for executives

Amy LindgrenIf you’ve been eying a corporate leadership position or if you’re in an executive role now, you know how complex the work can be. There’s a reason people at this level gobble up relevant books and podcasts: Smart leaders know they need input from a variety of sources to stay on track, both for themselves and for their organizations. If you’re planning your next read, one of these books might be just what you’re looking for.Head & Heart: The art of modern leadership, by Kirstin Ferguson, Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2023, $22.95. As an executive herself, and a former Air Force officer (in her native Australia), Ferguson describes modern leadership as a balance between head and heart. Accordingly, she provides four key attributes of the modern leader for each category. Then she further redefines leadership by assigning the principles to anyone, at any level who acts as a leader. As she explains, leadership is a series of moments, not a position of authority. While Ferguso...Latest news
