O’FALLON, Mo. – A one-and-a-half-year-old macaw remains on the loose after escaping days ago. The bird’s owners and local avian specialists are discussing how the bird will cope with the approaching cold front.“With Louie, he kind of just called to us in the pet store, and he kind of just called out to us,” owner Chris Harsy said.Since adopting Louie, the macaw has become a family member. He even gets along with their three dogs.Harsy was cleaning Louie’s cage a couple of days when the bird flew the proverbial coop and went out the door.Louie went from tree to tree as Harsy and others attempted to fetch him. It’s made Harsy and his family wonder why Louie escaped and hasn’t yet returned home. They believe it could have something to do with the bird’s friendly nature. Close Thanks for signing up! Denver Referred Question 2P asks voters to make the city’s preschool tax permanent

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 09:39:46 GMT

If Denver Referred Question 2P look familiar, that’s because Denver voters twice before have had their say on a sales tax that provides tuition support for families seeking to enroll 4-year-olds in preschool. The new measure on ballots for the Nov. 7 election is aimed at authorizing the now-17-year-old tax in perpetuity, without a need to ask voters to renew it.A narrow margin of Denverites in 2006 approved the initial 0.12% sales tax that launched the Denver Preschool Program, setting a rate that amounts to 12 cents on a $100 purchase. That tax came with an expiration date 10 years later. In 2014, two years ahead of that, the Denver City Council referred a measure to the ballot that proposed to increase the tax to 0.15% — 15 cents on a $100 purchase — and extend the expiration by another decade, to 2026. Voters approved that measure with 55% support. Now, three years ahead of time, the City Council is asking voters to vote on the tax a final time — unless there...

The Irvine Police Department is investigating a brawl that broke out between two soccer teams that brought spectators, parents and family members onto the field and into the melee over the weekend.  The Saturday night, Oct. 21, fight at Great Park in Irvine reportedly came at the end of the game between Club Garrafones from South Los Angeles and Irvine Zeta FC II, both of whom are a part of the professional development United Premier Soccer League.  The nearly four minute video obtained by KTLA shows the two teams and others in a violent altercation that moved back and forth across the field, with several people taking blows to the face, as well as one person ganged up on and kicked while they were down. Bryan Wallace, head coach of Irvine Zeta, believes his lower-ranked and younger team’s upset victory over the undefeated Club Garrafones is what sparked tempers and led to a dispute between two players that turned into an out-and-out fight that cleared the bleachers.  ...

Republicans nominate Mike Johnson for House speaker after Emmer’s withdrawal, desperate to end chaos

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 09:39:46 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans chose Rep. Mike Johnson as their latest nominee for House speaker late Tuesday, hours after an earlier pick, Rep. Tom Emmer, abruptly withdrew in the face of opposition from Donald Trump and hardline GOP lawmakers.Johnson of Louisiana, a lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, becomes the fourth Republican nominee after Emmer and the others fell short in what has become an almost absurd cycle of political infighting since Kevin McCarthy’s ouster as GOP factions jockey for power. Refusing to unify, far-right members won’t accept a more traditional speaker and moderate conservatives don’t want a hardliner. During private balloting, Johnson won a majority, but ahead of an expected House floor vote Wednesday the nominee will need almost all Republicans to win the gavel. “Mike! Mike! Mike!” lawmakers chanted at a press conference afterward, surrounding Johnson and posing for selfies in a show of support.Three weeks on, the Republicans hav...
